How to make jellyfish salad 涼拌海蜇皮 Taiwanese cold side dish

Now we are in the middle of summer and in Taiwan it is very very hot. So you might not be surprised that the Taiwanese like to enjoy cold foods and salads in this season. So here Joanne shows you how to prepare one of her favourite cold side dishes – jellyfish salad 涼拌海蜇皮.

Jellyfish salad 涼拌海蜇皮 ingredients

  • jellyfish-ingredientsJelly fish 170g
  • bunch of glass noodles
  • cucumber
  • carrot
  • celery
  • ginger
  • basil
  • sugar
  • fish sauce
  • mirin
  • vinegar
  • sesame oil
  • 1tsp salt

The list of ingredients above might look quite long but you’re likely to have most of them in the cupboard already if you cook any kind of asian food regularly. Of course you will need to get some jelly fish, Joanne bought a sealed refrigerated pouch of sliced jellyfish as the base of her recipe.

As its a salad you don’t have to labour over a hot wok! Basically after things are chopped to size its all put together in the bowl and mixed up – then its ready to serve. This is quite a traditional side dish at a summer meal in Taiwan. We hope you enjoy it – please watch the video below to see how it is made.

    this looks very delicious and perfect as a dish or at least side dish for these hot summer days. Will try this out for sure. Just need to figure out getting the jelly fish from the Chinese supermarket here, since we are not really in the sea food area here.

    I never had jellyfish in my life, so far, until trying out your recipe here and I may repeat myself, but it is worth it: one should suggest you for the next investiture !!! This is really really great! Got a package of jellyfish at the local Asian Supermarket. The lady recommended to put the jellyfish into water for maybe a few hours before putting the salat together for washing out the salt. She also told me that she at home adds only some enoki mushrooms and coriander, no other vegetables. So, besides all your vegetables I added these enoki, as well. Works great and is a fabulous dish in the warm summer !!!

    • It’s a very healthy meal for summer. I’m impressed that you tried jellyfish for the first time thanks to my recipe! Next time I’ll try with the enoki mushrooms too, I like them in soups and stir fries usually.
